Born out of the struggles of the working class people in the US during the late 1800's, today we celebrate May Day.
It is this struggle which led to the establishment of the eight hour work day which today, many take for granted. Many lives were lost during the original protests. The recognised leaders were arrested, some tried and eventually hung. Activists died from confrontations with the police. Those who suffered death due to their will to stand up are today known as "The Haymarket Martyrs".
The concept of capitalism which continues to spawn conflicts world wide is alive and well today. The present situation in Venezuela, if traced to it's roots, can be attributed to the never ending struggle between capitalism and socialism, neither of which are perfect. Yet the idea that capitalism is superior to socialism is one which is sold to us through economic and political teachings by the power brokers of the world.
Today, right here in T&T we are seeing a reversal in the gains made by the working class. The many struggles and battles which were fought by our own local heroes, people whom we never hear about in our history classes, are all being destroyed.
Names such as Cipriani, Rienzi, Butler, Nunez, and many others which are synonymous with labour and indeed, the political and social development of our country are relegated to the archives of our history and kept basically covered under a blanket of dust.
It's only during periods leading up to Labour Day and May Day that we ever hear about them.
Our consumer based society however, has little interest in such occurrences. Comfortable to spend it's hard earned money on the goods and services provided by the current architects of our demise.
Look at what has taken place over the last three years. We have seen a continuous onslaught on the working class in this country. More so, the sector which belongs to organised labour.
The Steel Workers Union was handed a severe defeat when Arcelor Mittal closed it's doors and sent everyone home without paying severance and other benefits. A move which rocked that union at it's very foundations.
The Communications Workers Union has also been under attack. State controlled resources within this sector are gradually being transferred into the hands of the private sector. Look at all the developments between TSTT and Massey Energy etc.
Yet the most crushing blow to the Labour Movement came last November when Petrotrin, against all advice, was closed down. Sending thousands of workers and members of the Oilfields Workers Trade Union and other representative unions, home. Albeit with some, though not all their just dues.
The entire social fabric of our country is being reinvented with economic power being transferred upwards, into the higher echelons of our society. Being placed into the hands of the private sector. In so doing, the gains which were made, dating back to the first May Day are all being lost.
Oilfield workers were stygmatised and ostracised in a well coordinated effort to label them as lazy, overpaid and unproductive. So much so that the mere mention of being an ex oilfield worker, shuts the door on any possibility of being hired by the new entities.
Labour has played a significant role in it's own defeat however. Maximum style leaders with aspirations and demonstrated symbols of self agrandisement left many of them, out of touch with the troops. Troops who grew comfortable with their socio/economic position without having a clue as to how they got there.
Add to that, the clear trend of Labour leaders, piggybacking on their position to end up in party politics and indeed government, and we begin to understand what went wrong and indeed why, we are in this position today. The fact that we have had at least five major labour leaders ascending to the seat of power, yet without any significant gains in the rights and benefits of workers, speaks volumes as to the sincerity of these loud mouthed and so called militant ones who suddenly, all seem to have lost their voices.
Political patronage and bias has landed us back to the days of slavery.
Look around you and tell me if during your day you don't at least once, see an Amalgamated Security vehicle.
Look at the promises made by the state with regards to Heritage, Paria etc, and compare it with the current reality. The promised jobs are nowhere to be found as day by day, they are being taken up by the private sector at slave wages and without benefits.
May Day?????
Indeed. Yet not because I should go out and march behind the banners of failed leaders but rather, as is used as an SOS when in peril. We are indeed in peril.

¿¿¿DÍA DE MAYO????
Nacido de las luchas de la gente de la clase trabajadora en los Estados Unidos a finales de los 1800 ' s, hoy celebramos el Día de Mayo.
Es esta lucha lo que llevó a establecer el día de trabajo de ocho horas que hoy, muchos dan por sentado. Muchas vidas se perdieron durante las protestas originales. Los líderes reconocidos fueron arrestados, algunos intentaron y finalmente colgaron. Activistas murieron por enfrentamientos con la policía. Aquellos que sufrieron la muerte debido a su voluntad de ponerse de pie son conocidos hoy como ′′ Los mártires de Haymarket ".
El concepto de capitalismo que continúa generando conflictos en todo el mundo está vivo y coleando hoy. La situación actual en Venezuela, si se remonta a sus raíces, puede atribuirse a la lucha interminable entre el capitalismo y el socialismo, ninguno de los cuales son perfectos. Sin embargo, la idea de que el capitalismo es superior al socialismo es aquella que se nos vende a través de enseñanzas económicas y políticas por los corredores de poder del mundo.
Hoy, justo aquí en T & T estamos viendo un reverso en las ganancias realizadas por la clase trabajadora. Las muchas luchas y batallas que fueron libradas por nuestros propios héroes locales, personas de las que nunca escuchamos hablar en nuestras clases de historia, están siendo destruidas.
Nombres como Cipriani, Rienzi, Butler, Nunez, y muchos otros que son sinónimos de trabajo y, de hecho, el desarrollo político y social de nuestro país están relegados a los archivos de nuestra historia y se mantienen básicamente cubiertos bajo una manta de polvo.
Es sólo durante los períodos previos al Día del Trabajo y el Día de Mayo que alguna vez escuchamos hablar de ellos.
Nuestra sociedad basada en el consumidor, sin embargo, tiene poco interés en tales ocurrencias. Cómodo de gastar es dinero duro ganado en los bienes y servicios que proporcionan los arquitectos actuales de nuestra desaparición.
Mira lo que ha ocurrido en los últimos tres años. Hemos visto un ataque continuo en la clase trabajadora en este país. Más aún, el sector que pertenece al trabajo organizado.
El sindicato de trabajadores de acero recibió una dura derrota cuando Arcelor Mittal cerró sus puertas y envió a todos a casa sin pagar indemnización y otros beneficios. Un movimiento que sacudió esa unión en sus cimientos.
El Sindicato de Trabajadores de Comunicaciones también ha sido atacado. Los recursos controlados por el Estado en este sector están siendo transferidos gradualmente a manos del sector privado. Mira todos los acontecimientos entre TSTT y Massey Energy, etc.
Sin embargo, el golpe más aplastante al Movimiento Laboral tuvo lugar el pasado noviembre cuando Petrotrin, contra todos los consejos, fue cerrado. Enviando miles de trabajadores y miembros del Sindicato de Trabajadores Petroleros y otros sindicatos representativos, a casa. Aunque con algunos, aunque no todos son solo cuotas.
Todo el tejido social de nuestro país se está reinventando con el poder económico transferido hacia arriba, a los escalones más altos de nuestra sociedad. Ser colocado en manos del sector privado. Al hacerlo, las ganancias que se hicieron, que se remontan al primer día de mayo, se están perdiendo.
Los trabajadores del campo petrolero fueron estigmatizados y ostracizados en un esfuerzo bien coordinado para etiquetarlos como perezosos, sobrepagados e improductivos. Tanto es así que la mera mención de ser un ex trabajador del campo petrolero, cierra la puerta ante cualquier posibilidad de ser contratado por las nuevas entidades.
Sin embargo, el trabajo ha jugado un papel significativo en su propia derrota. Líderes de máximo estilo con aspiraciones y demostrados símbolos de auto agrandecimiento dejó a muchos de ellos, fuera de contacto con las tropas. Tropas que crecieron cómodas con su posición socioeconómica sin tener idea de cómo llegaron allí.
Agrega a eso, la clara tendencia de los líderes laboristas, el cerdito en su posición de terminar en la política de partidos y en el gobierno, y comenzamos a entender lo que salió mal y, de hecho, por qué, hoy estamos en esta posición. El hecho de que hayamos tenido al menos cinco grandes líderes laborales ascendiendo a la sede del poder, sin embargo, sin ninguna mejora significativa en los derechos y beneficios de los trabajadores, dice mucho sobre la sinceridad de estos ruidosos boca y los llamados militantes que repentinamente, Todos parecen haber perdido sus voces.
El patrocinio político y el sesgo nos han devuelto a los días de esclavitud.
Mira a tu alrededor y dime si durante tu día no lo haces al menos una vez, ve un vehículo de seguridad amalgamado.
Mira las promesas hechas por el Estado con respecto al Patrimonio, Paria etc, y compáralas con la realidad actual. Los empleos prometidos no se encuentran en ningún lugar como día a día, están siendo tomados por el sector privado con salarios esclavos y sin beneficios.
¿Día de Mayo?
De hecho. Sin embargo, no porque deba salir y marchar detrás de los banners de líderes fallidos, sino más bien, como se usa como SOS cuando está en peligro. Estamos en peligro.
